Dedicated to LuRena Hayes Johnson, 1886-1969, daughter of John Phipps Hayes and Eleanor Jane Hayes, who spent a lifetime searching for our Irish roots, and whose devotion to family history built the foundation for our Hayes Family Organization. |
Volunteers
We are always looking for volunteers to assist in our historical and genealogical research. If you feel that you could help out in any way on any of the projects listed on this page, please let us know.
Below is a list of jobs we currently need help with:
- Genealogy Research Chairman. Our current chariman lost her husband in February, and has many new responsibilities; she needs a break from genealogy research.
- Typists. Type old letters from family members dated late 1890's - early 1900's. Makes interesting reading about family history as you type. Can be done in WordPerfect of Word software.
- Ancestral file. Proofreading records after they have been downloaded from the Ancestral File into our "Legacy" computer program and printed out.
- Irish Research. Search Irish land records and deeds on microfilm for Phipps/hayes names around Clonakilty. Because of the number of records, probably best done at the Salt Lake Family History Center.
Goals & Projects
Review of 2001 Goals. In March 2001 we outlined our goals for the family organization. These were: (1) have a family reunion, (2) elect new officers, (3) concentrate on genealogical research in Ireland, (4) establish a JHFO Website, (5) encourage individual family members to check the ancestral file and make corrections, (6) convert our historical records from the old long form into an 8 1/2" x 11" format (7) put them on CDRom disks, (8) update our mail list. With the completion of the CDRom project this summer, all will have been met with the exception of No. 5.
JHFO goals for 2002.We have chosen 2 major goals for this year:
- Replace 2 small markers for George Hayes & Frances Phipps' graves in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. The markers are placed at the foot of George & Frances' graves, inscribed simply with the initials GH and FH, and are almost obliterated.
- Convert our genealogy records from hard copy into computer format which will enable us to easily update our records. One of our cousins who lives in Washington state has agreed to begin this project. She could use some help - any volunteers? For this project we have chosen a versatile genealogy program called "Legacy" that is compatible with the LDS Church PAF program. It will enable us to print many different kinds of reports: pedigree charts, family groups sheets, time lines, descendants' books (which will achieve an old ambition of a directory of Hayes descendants), add pictures, sound, create slide shoes, screen shows, etc.
Although we have downloaded all our Hayes records from the Ancestral File, we are still seeking GEDCom files (either on disk or via email) from those of you who have your personal ancestral files (PAF) on disk. We still need files from the following major branches (or sub-branches): Brewster, Doxey, LeCheminant, George Henry Hayes; Walter Moore; Hyrum Johnson; Murray O. Hayes; Isaac John Hayes (Claude E. Hayes, Emma Alice Hoyt Hayes, Isaac R. Hayes); Henry Nephi Hayes; George Samuel Hayes; William Lehi Hayes. Let us know if you have any of these files.
